My Beautiful Slice of Work Space Heaven

When we moved into our home, one of the first rooms we fell in love with was our den. It wasn’t the color scheme that caught our eye (I honestly couldn’t tell you if it reminded me of a ratty old movie theatre or a funeral home), but the structure of it.

The den was actually supposed to be a car port. Our home was built in the 1950’s. A nice sized ranch with attached car port. We are the third owners of this home. The previous owners did terrible work on the house, but the one thing that we really appreciated about it was the converted car port to den.

That became our living space. Our children grew up playing in that room. We have the piano in that room so it is where I teach.

The hue had burgundy undertones. We inherited my grandparents furniture from the 80s/90s so it kind of worked in there. The rest of the room was decorated with all the toys little minds can dream of (yes, spoiled rotten children)

But what caught our eye and was a key selling point, was the shelf that ran all around the ceiling. Our first thought was how we can put our Christmas Village up there! We had inherited my grandparents set and my parents had already started on another set. It was perfect.

There were many issues with the room. There was no heat other than a shotty gas fireplace that we replaced immediately. All the windows were single paned – original with the home. And there was a GAPING hole at the ceiling at the very back of the shelf into the attic- so cold air flowed in nicely in the winter.

seriously cold!!

Eventually, we saved up enough money for renovations. The best part is the handy husband that I have and his equally talented dad, brother in law and friends.

We got a dumpster and tore into that room.

I would love to show you demo pics but they are not loading right now

So it was a 2 month process of demo to completion. It was wonderful. We paid to have the skylights taken out and the roof done there – no more raining in the den while I’m teaching (the best was the day a piece of plaster fell from the ceiling – that was the straw that broke the camels back on putting everything in motion) The sheetrock was also a paid job. Otherwise, husband and crew did the rest – pay was cheap – all the burgers and beer they could eat and drink at the end of the day.

So back to the original point of the story! My beautiful work space piano corner. Husband built me a desk, shiplap walls and shelving. He thought of everything with the desk. Measured my tallest book and accomidated accomadated(OK google……….)accommodated for everything that I need plus room to grow.

The piano is from 1986. Apparently, cream colored everything with mauve accents was the rage and my parents went for it! Hence, my gorgeous white formica piano! Seriously, I do LOVE that it’s different!

For the holidays, I LOVE when we dress up the den! Over the years, my taste in decor has changed. When the kids were younger, everything was about them. The house decorated in all their projects for every holiday. Slowly, we started saving the projects in plastic bins and changing out for slightly different looks.

Now my den is rustic. OH I love it! The dark wood floors, blue/gray hues around the room and creamy white accents throughout.

The village goes up every year and in recent years I started collecting lanterns. The silk flowers get changed out seasonally.

I fell in love with the ones I purchased for spring recently and I decided to put them up immediately! Even with snowy February looming still, I love the peonies and eucalyptus and roses combination.

I was going to take another picture with everything all cleaned up here but honestly, this is how I roll. I try, but, as I often say, my husband did NOT marry me for my housekeeping skills.

If you like the decor for spring, I got it on Amazon. I used 2 eucalyptus garlands to cover the top.

I only used 1 poeny flower garland. The pink flowers did nothing for me so I removed them. Just the peonies and roses which matched beautifully with the roses already in the eucalyptus.
